Duke of Edinburgh Training

From time to time our community shop hosts a student (aged 16 upwards) working towards an award. This can however pose more challenges than you might imagine, and we are not a sleepy little corner shop, but a busy business!

We have fifty plus volunteers who make up our amazing Team Shop – and it’s important to make the experience productive and positive for both student and volunteer!

Interested in training with us?

Step 1: Find out if there’s space

We offer D of E training on Saturday mornings from 8.30 am to 11.00 am. For practical reasons we can only host one student at a time. We therefore recommend the first thing to do is contact our Shop Manager, Ali, who can let you know if we currently have space.

Step 2: Read the letter of understanding

Please download and read the letter of understanding. This is for both students and guardians.

Step 3: Guardian approval

Please download the guardian approval form. This must be completed by a guardian of the student and then returned to the shop.

Step 4: Read & sign the child protection statement

Finally, please download and read the child protection statement. This statement must be read and signed by both the student and their guardian. It then needs to be returned to the shop to be signed our shop manager.

Going ahead?

These are some of the tasks that can be safely done by a student, and which are part and parcel of being a volunteer!

  • Preparing cardboard for recycling
  • Checking ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates in our display chillers
  • Restocking shelves and observing ‘stock rotation’ procedures
  • Cleaning shelving as required
  • Helping to serve our customers
  • Processing deliveries as required
